At around 7 a.m. on Monday morning, police say that a person was walking near the Greenbelt Library when he was accosted and assaulted by two Black men who pushed him to the ground and kicked him several times, police say.
According to the victim, one of the men had a knife - which was not used in the attack - and both were wearing black hoodies and jeans. One was described as being heavyset, while the other had a slim build.
Following the assault, both ran away toward University Square after stealing their victim's cellphone.
Police say that the man was able to get to the Aquatic Center and told an employee he had just been robbed, and an emergency call was made.
Responding officers canvassed the area, but were unable to track down either suspect, while the victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation of his injuries.
The department reported the assault on social media, which drew a wide array of responses from area residents, including one who believes he may have been targeted by one of the two last night.
"I moved here (two) years ago, I thought (Greenbelt) was safe," one resident said. "Every time you turn around someone is (getting robbed) or shot.
"Greenbelt Police department needs some help," she continued."Cars have been broken into, they leave a card on your car stating call your insurance company. No one takes any fingerprints."
Another said that he "saw the dude with a black hoodie ... He (tried) to rob me yesterday, but I was smarter and always aware about my environment."
The incident remains under investigation.
